Master the art of layering necklaces

Layering jewellery is a popular trend among fashion enthusiasts, and it’s not hard to see why. Let's face it - wearing the same piece of jewellery day in and day out can get a tad monotonous, especially for those who love to experiment with their personal style. With the art of layering, you can create an endless combination of looks that showcase your personality and unique style. Layering also allows you to maximise the wear you get out of your jewellery collection, including pieces you would rarely wear on their own.

Layering necklaces is an easy way to add flair and individuality to any outfit. By combining necklaces of varying lengths, textures, and embellishments, you can effortlessly achieve a one-of-a-kind look. Read on as we walk you through the ins and outs of layering necklaces.

The Basics

The first and most important thing to keep in mind is the length of each necklace. A successful layered look will comprise of several necklaces sitting at different lengths on the body, with the appropriate amount of space between each chain. If the pieces are too similar in length or fall too close together, they will obscure each other and give off a messy look.

If this is your first-time layering necklaces, aim for the magic number of three necklaces - one choker, one short necklace and one longer necklace. Chokers are the first layer and should sit right across the centre of your neck. The short necklace will be the second layer, ending just on or slightly below your collarbones. Aim for chains around 45cm in length for the perfect second necklace. Finally, the long necklace will fall below your collarbones, ending around the middle of your chest. The third necklace should be a minimum of 60cm in length to ensure adequate space between your layers. Once you get the hang of it, you can get creative and add as many necklaces as you want!

Mix & Match

The fun part about layering necklaces, is that you can create countless looks just by mixing and matching textures and embellishments. Even if you are going for a simple look, you can make it your own by choosing different chain types.

To achieve a timeless look, you can layer your chains from daintiest to chunkiest and vice versa. While dainty chains may not be the focal point of your look, adding intricate details will create a more elevated outcome. You can opt for more textured alternatives to the classic fine chain such as twist chains, ball chains, bead chains or thin rope chains.

When it comes to medium weight necklaces, experiment with an array of eye-catching styles such as figaro chains, link chains and snake chains. For chunkier chains, keep an eye out for different shaped links – rectangular, long, circular, etc.

Pearls, shimmering cubic zirconia, semi-precious stones, pendants, and motifs are a great way to personalise your look. Start layering with a freshwater pearl choker or add a pendant necklace to round off your stack – the options are endless! Y necklaces, chain scarf necklaces and bolo necklaces make great statement pieces that can be a unique foundation to build your stack around.
